This is one of several myths about refunds that seem to be circulating this year. It is indeed a myth. In truth, most refunds are sent out within 21 days of filing the return. To get your refunds faster, be sure to e-fiile your return and select to have the refund directly deposited into your acount. Two other myths are that calling the IRS will get your refund sent faster and that you can find the status of your refund by requesting a tax transcript. Neither is true. To check on the status of your refund, go to irs.gov and click on “Where’s my refund.” Remember that the IRS will never contact you by phone, text or email about the status of your refund. Another myth is that if you are claiming Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit, your refund will be sent on Febuary 5. In truth, that is the earliestdate the refund can be sent, but it may be sent later.
