Once the IRS records a lien against you it is very difficult to get it removed. However, as part of the Fresh Start Program, they have recently made several collection procedure changes designed to help taxpayers. One is that they increased the threshold for filing a federal tax lien from $5,000 to $10,000, although they do not usually file a lien until the amount owed reaches $25,000. Another is that it is now easier to obtain a lien withdrawal (as opposed to a Release) after the tax is paid. Third, they will now withdraw liens in most cases when the taxpayer enters into a direct debit Installment Agreement and the amount owed is under $50,000.
