The Dirty Dozen: (1) Telephone scams threatening to have you arrested if you don’t pay immediately. The IRS will never call you asking for money. (2) Phony emails asking you to go to a website and give personal information. The IRS does not use email. (3) ID Theft by stealing your Social Security number. If you think this has happened, call the IRS immediately and report it. (4) & (5) Tax Preparer fraud, usually by promising a large refund by using fake 1099’s and claiming unearned credits. Be careful who you choose to do your taxes. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. (6) Claiming fictitious income. (7) Claiming inflated deductions for charity, medical expenses, etc. (8) For businesses – claiming false research credit and fuel tax credit. (9) Promise of “secret schemes” to avoid taxes or claiming tax collection is illegal. (10) Impersonating charities after a disaster in order to collect money and promising your donation is tax deducible. (11) Abusive tax shelters. (12) Unreported overseas bank accounts. The Voluntary Disclosure Program to admit these accounts is now ended.
